Perfect for: History buffs, vintage Hollywood fans, and anyone looking for a quick, classic LA thrill.

Right across the street from the bustling food stalls of Grand Central Market sit two iconic orange-and-black wooden cable cars. Welcome to Angels Flight, famously known as the "World’s Shortest Railway." It is a living piece of Edwardian history that has survived over a century of chaos, demolition, and reinvention in Downtown Los Angeles.

1901: Built for the High Society

Angels Flight was built in 1901 by an engineer and Civil War veteran named Colonel J.W. Eddy. Back then, Bunker Hill was the most upscale neighborhood in LA, packed with wealthy lawyers and doctors living in massive Victorian mansions.

But the hill was incredibly steep, and walking up the muddy incline after work in a heavy suit or corset was exhausting. Eddy came up with a brilliant solution: a funicular railway. Two counterbalanced cars—named Sinai and Olivet—were attached to the same cable. As one car goes up, the weight of the other car helps pull it down. On opening day, it cost just one single penny to ride.

The Great Move: Saved from the Scrap Heap

By the late 1960s, the city completely leveled the old Bunker Hill neighborhood to make way for modern skyscrapers. In 1969, Angels Flight was shut down, dismantled piece by piece, and packed away into storage boxes.

The little cars languished in a warehouse for 27 years. Most people assumed they were gone forever. However, thanks to passionate historians, the railway was finally pulled out of storage, completely restored, and reopened in 1996. Because its original location was built over, engineers reassembled the track half a block south of where it originally sat, placing it right next to California Plaza.

By the Numbers: Small Track, Massive Crowds

Don't let its tiny size fool you—Angels Flight is one of the hardest-working transit systems in California history.

  • 298 Feet: The total distance the cars travel from top to bottom.
  • 33% Grade: The incredibly steep incline the cars climb.
  • 100 Million+: The estimated number of passengers who have stepped aboard since 1901, making it one of the highest ridership-per-mile tracks in the world.

From Classic Noir to "La La Land"

Angels Flight is a certified Hollywood celebrity. Because of its vintage look, it has been featured in dozens of classic black-and-white noir films, TV shows like Bosch and Perry Mason, and even video games like Grand Theft Auto.

Its most famous modern moment came in the 2016 Oscar-winning movie La La Land, where Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone share a romantic kiss inside one of the cars. The movie actually helped spark a massive safety upgrade that allowed the historic railway to reopen to the public in 2017 after a brief closure.

🤫 Tour Guide Secrets

Surprising Tourist Fact: Even though the cars look identical, they are permanently locked to their own sides of the track. Olivet always runs on the north side, and Sinai always runs on the south side. They only ever come within four inches of each other at the very center of the hill where the track splits to let them pass.

  • The Secret Discount: A one-way ticket costs $1.50. But if you have a local LA Metro transit TAP card, you can scan it at the top station booth to get your ride for just 75 cents!
